We were recently interviewed by Tim Honegger on our experiences as couchsurfers… one of the things we have done while traveling ever since we started traveling together, and something I would recommend for anyone who is curious about others, and interested in meeting people you would not meet otherwise.
I remember reading about the organization on CNN.com around 2004, shortly after the movement started gaining members worldwide. At the time I was single, and it seemed a bit risky to simply write strangers and request a spot on their couch. So while I had a profile for myself and as free-spirited as I may be, I never actually ended up participating on my own.
After Phil and I met I created a profile for the two of us and once we were on our year of traveling in 2008/09 we started actively using it. Some of the most wonderful experiences we had on that trip were thanks to couchsurfing: while in Hawaii, we lost our couchsurfing virginity with Donna & Rob, the most gracious hosts on the planet, who not only showed us around the island but introduced us to blue potatoes and ensured that we enjoyed a last steak before heading off to China.
Once in Beijing, Marcus helped us enjoy fantastic duck dinners seven nights in a row, and we would have never partied the way we did had we not met Sebastien, who happened to live in China but did not like Chinese food 😉 Fact of the matter is that we have never had one bad experience, and have experienced things we might never have come across had we not been a part of this amazing project.
